This work of mine is about all the different fish and dangerous creatures of the sea known to us Islanders. It’s also about the beauty of the sea with its corals and all of the colours. We are the guardians of the deep blue seas in the Torres Strait, the protectors.
Franklin Mye
I was born on Thursday Island in 1980. I belong to two tribes: Samsep, my mother’s tribe from Darnley and Komet, my father’s tribe from Murray. Both of these islands are in the eastern zone of the Torres Strait. I believe my work reflects my family and me, and our lifestyle reflects the beauty of my island home in the Torres Strait. My Grandfather and Grandmother used to tell my sisters about how hard the lifestyle they lived before was, how things have changed and how easy the lifestyle we live today is. My grandfather and grandmother are big inspirations in my life and also in my work.
