Also called Wrasse. It is very nice to eat. We used to catch these young children when we were out in the dingy. I like to eat this fish roasted or fried. It is a very pretty fish with large scales, yellow throat and purple and blue on its side.
Sedey Stephen
I was born on Mer to parents John and Agnes Bourne and am the sixth child in a family of five girls and two boys. I am of the Komet tribe, one of the eight tribes of Mer. Sardine is our totem fish, and the Koki wind (northerly) is ours. I grew up speaking the traditional language Meriam Mir and Torres Strait Creole. I went to school until I was fourteen on Mer, reaching a year seven standard of education. In 1966 I came to Darnley to work in the store as branch manager. 1980 I married Ben Stephen, and in 1983 travelled to Thursday Island, Cairns Townsville and Mackay. Returning to Darnley in 1987, I worked at the store again. I have always enjoyed drawing and still have some works collected by the government teacher during my early school years.
